Counselling & Psychotherapy

I am counsellor and psychotherapist in Advanced Clinical training at The Berne Institute, in conjunction with Middlesex University.

The psychotherapy model that I mainly work with is Transactional Analysis (TA), and I also use other methods to include; Cognitive Behavioural, Brief Solutions, Attachment and Video Interaction Guidance. Use of TA in therapy helps people with change, and in particular their personal growth and development. The model is based on how we use communication and patterns of behaviour. In therapy understanding what happened in childhood will help us to see how our beliefs, feelings and behaviours have developed, but then allow you to make a choice with what you would like to do for your future.

The overriding belief is that everyone has the ability to learn and make changes in their life if they desire to. Therefore, using TA in our sessions will enable you to identify negative patterns and behaviours in your life and give you the choice and opportunity to make changes for positive outcomes.

Counselling or Psychotherapy?

The difference between having counselling or psychotherapy will depend on the issue that you bring to the sessions. There is no clear definition of the difference, however it is generally thought that counselling sessions may be for a shorter period or time, with psychotherapy being longer term. A psychotherapist will have studied for longer than two years and will have a Masters level of qualification.
